Neil: How did you first hear about HKT and what were your first impressions, Johnny?

Johnny:  It must have been over 10 years ago that your name came up at work. I’d already been using a custom tailor and I needed someone new in Atlanta.

I really liked that you had all the fabrics I love: Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil, Zegna, Loro Piana.

I also liked how friendly and genuine you and the team were. That was really important to me.

Neil: Can you remember the first garment we created for you?

Johnny: Absolutely. It was a suit in a nice fabric, but not an amazing fabric. I just wanted to see how you would measure and fit me.

You created a suit out of a blue herringbone fabric with a red paisley interior. It had peaked lapels, slanted pocket holes, and a ticket pocket. The pants were one pleat and had cuffs. I remember it so well.

We did that first suit together, and the fit was great. I got a lot of compliments about how it looked on me.

I knew from that first suit and the way you nailed my fit that I could build a relationship with you and the team.

So much so that I must have around 15 to 20 of your jackets in my closet. And I’ve probably got 8 to 10 suits created by HKT.

Neil: Do you have any favorite items we’ve created for you?

Johnny: I got the largest award of my life from my alma mater, the University of Alabama. They named me a Distinguished Engineering Fellow. You made me a new tux for the presentation, which I absolutely love.

It’s made from a black Holland & Sherry fabric with a single button. But to give it a twist, you put a dark purple camouflage liner in it. It’s a real classic.

From a different perspective, something else we created together that I love is a green jacket with white window panes. A green that’s similar to the color of the jackets the winners of the US Masters get.

I was in the store and you showed me the fabric and a lady said, “I don’t know you, sir, but that is all you.” So, I had to have something created in it, and the jacket didn’t disappoint.

Neil: That’s so good to hear. And what else have we created for you lately?

Johnny: You’ve made me three pairs of custom jeans, which fit incredibly well. We’ve also done a couple of custom sneakers together. We’ve done overcoats, and a sweater too.

Whatever you guys create I feel like a million dollars in. You always know what exactly works for me.

Neil: Yer, I feel like we’ve built up a good relationship over the years. We collaborate well when creating a garment?

Johnny: Definitely. When we first started working together, I probably told you exactly what I wanted, because I’d done custom clothing for so long.

But as I began to trust you, I’d say to you, “If you could do one more thing with this jacket, what would it be?” You’d always suggest something to spice up a garment or make it more me. Changing the stitching or the liner, or doing something different with the final button hole.

Now, I’ll pick a fabric and say to you, “Do what you want. Let’s have some fun.” I trust you and the team immensely, and it’s so much fun for me, as someone who loves and collects art.

Neil: I love that. That’s a special compliment. We must be doing things right? 

Johnny: Garments wise, definitely. I get so many compliments from everyone when I wear something we’ve created together. People pick up on the beauty of the fabric, the awesome liner, the great stitch work. Or they simply say, “That suit completely nails you.”

But, for me, it’s not just about the garments. Your customer service is impeccable too. I love spending time at the store and chatting with you and the team. You’re now a great friend of mine and someone I couldn’t do without.

Neil: Thank you for the kind words, Johnny.

Johnny: No, you deserve it. And I can’t recommend you guys enough. In fact, I never stop doing it.
